Guest Bedroom Refresh

Initially I was going to blog about this room AFTER my Home Office Reveal but my desk is taking a bit longer to come in so I am posting about this room FIRST. It’s not the full reveal because my wallpaper for my built-ins has also been delayed but no complaints from me, I've had PLENTY to do while I wait.

If you follow my stories on Instagram, then you know I totally switched gears and swapped the guest bedroom and my office (my previous office is now the guest room and the previous guest room now my office). Although I had just designed my guest bedroom, I couldn’t handle all the “footstep” noises upstairs since my master is right below the guest bedroom (I’m a light sleeper). But I nearly cried taking everything down (ok, I'm being dramatic)...but I loved it!

But at least being quarantined for two weeks has given me a fun project to work on. I challenged myself to work with what I have without having to buy anything (well, at least not much, there are a few items I ordered online but they were worth it to totally transform a room on a budget).

As I threw everything from the this room into the new room, I started to see a color pattern take shape (and colors I thought beautifully contrasted each other). Thus, the guest room idea began (while using alot of what I already had). I honestly don’t do much “planning”...at least when it comes to a “refresh”. I just know what I like, what colors compliment each other, and play around with it and somehow it works. But I do put a lot of work and thought into it (and I hope it shows ☺️). Shall we begin?

I kept the outside of the guest room pretty simple until we can transform the hallway (please excuse all the gadgets but, “real life”). I also need to add a rug but I hope it still says, “Welcome”. If the “Bed & Breakfast” sign doesn’t say “welcome”, I don’t know what does. ;).

I loved the sign when I thrifted it several years ago because I truly love entertaining. If you ever stay in my home, don’t be surprised if there’s a tray of coffee and breakfast waiting for you at your door.

Speaking of opening doors, let’s take a peek inside, shall we?

I love this cute little sign that says, “Hello”. Another way to welcome my guests. I kept it simple here because I just love this little malachite table...I didn’t want to cover it up!

I knew I wanted something different for this space. I also knew I wanted a casual island vibe for when guests come to visit and relax. That means all the floral and polka dots in this built in desk has to go...it’s killing my vibe! BUT, we’ll have to wait for Part 2 to see more of that. ;)

Peeking in the background, you can catch a glimpse of one of my teal lamps on the bedside table. These are hand blown glass lamps and one of our first splurges when we bought our home.

I also love this "Welcome" pillow from Target. With comfy pillows and a leisure magazine, is this bed inviting or what?

The palm tree artwork was something I purchased 6 months ago at Home Goods and thought it would be PERFECT for this space.

Those sconces!!! I bought them on Amazon. Now I will say, they are very delicate and a bit difficult to put together but you can’t beat the price for the look!

You may be wondering why that vase is on the floor, that's because I forgot to remove it from this shot while I waited for the elephant to dry...

Yes, THIS elephant! I LOVE my wicker elephant. I found her at an estate sale on our island last year. Ellie the elephant has been white, hot pink, and now this coral color (more specifically, “Sunrise” by krylon).

I love layering rugs...especially animal print rugs.

I have a brief “Welcome” sign so my guests can know of local amenities. The acrylic frame was purchased at Dollar General. The palm and beaded vase was thrifted and the horse tea light is from Johnathan Adler (I like mixing thrifted items with pricier designer items).

And I’m sorry but you may get a visitor in the middle of the night. I’m not talking ghosts, I’m talking about my dog Petals. You may see her bed peeking through as this is her favorite spot to perch and keep our guests company. She does rule the roost after all.

The chair pillow is a Chiang Mai dragon pillow purchased on Amazon (although I'm partial to the floral side). You guys have to check them out! They have so many BEAUTIFUL varieties at various price points!

I thought the LA and Catalina island pictures were perfect for this space. I've had them for years and a great memory of when the hubs and I lived near LA and visited the Catalina Islands (which was ABSOLUTELY beautiful by the way).

Don't judge my palm plant...it's making a come back. I'm getting better, I've had this one for over a year!

This door leads to the balcony. Now before we step onto the balcony, I must worn you that it's small (thus, why it's called a Romeo and Juliette balcony). It also needs some painting but still a very quaint space to sip some coffee and watch the sunrise.

I pulled the hibiscus flower from our yard (shhhh...don't tell the hubs). And as you look over our balcony you can see part of our deck...this is my favorite area to lounge in and sip a cocktail.

And in case you're wondering, the small outdoor rug is from Target.

Now I know my teak rocking chairs may look old but teak is very good quality. One thing about teak is that it starts to turn SILVER over time (I can't wait for that to happen). Sorta like patina on brass so they stay (no matter how "old" they may look).

As we step back inside you can see my vintage campaign dresser and a magazine rack where my guests can have a leisurely read (or just look at pretty pictures like I do).

The leopard is actually a 14k gold planter I thrifted and the Heron painting is one of the hubster's faves (from a local artist).

I think the butterfly handles may be my favorite part of this dresser...

We still need upgrades in here like the light switches, doors, and doorknobs...but all in time. That’s why I love “refreshes”...you can transform a room in a shorter amount of time and within a limited budget.

I have yet to find a spot for this mirror but when I do, it’s gonna be a showstopper! It’s a replica of the coral reef mirror Ballard Designs had but I found this at At Home for half the price. For now, it hides this weird short storage door (does anyone else have one of those)?

Whew! Well I think that's about all for today.

I love how it turned out (considering my limited resources). Even the hubs liked it and he’s a tough client. ;)

I wanted the guest room to be green and luscious for my guests to getaway and feel like they were on an exotic retreat. I hope I accomplished that. Could you see yourself getting some r&r in this space?

I'm still waiting for my wallpaper to arrive for my built-ins. It doesn't look too bad as it is but it's not what I'm looking for for this space...here's a sneak peek as is...

Hope you enjoyed your visit and please come back!
