Thrifty Finds: Reading Nook Refresh

Writer's picture: Christina HollensbeChristina Hollensbe

Sorry, I've been MIA for a bit but I'm back with a small thrifty refresh for ya!

Anyone who knows me knows my love for thrifting. I often go on the hunt at Estate Sales, thrift stores, and even “junk” stores (hey, you never know what kind of treasure you may find in the midst of the chaos 😉).

Along with being an avid thrifter, I also have a self-professed obsession with lamps and throw pillows (the first step is admitting you have a problem...). When I saw this palm tree lamp for $6 (that’s right, $6!!!), at one of my favorite thrift stores, I knew I had to have it.

There was another one I was debating on but the one on the left won out (probably because it was significantly lower in price).

I know what you are probably thinking, that looks awful right?! But I COULD NOT WAIT to get this beauty home.  I had just the place for it too!

The only problem was, you can see how dark the lamp is (bleh!). You guys know my love for bright colors and GOLD! My typical go-to gold is this Rustoleum’s Gold Metallic spray paint but to be honest, I just wasn’t in the mood to dig out the paint, clear the driveway, make a pallet to spray on, and fight the wind (ok, maybe I was just being a bit lazy). SO, this time I went with my trusted Rub N Buff in “Gold Leaf” . I have used it for several other projects and I just love it! I use it for almost everything. I even used it to brighten up the dark bronze hardware that was on this accent table in order to match my Federal Convex Mirror (another recent Estate Sale beauty).

The Rub n Buff is a small tube but a little goes a long way. I also used it for some shell sconces I found on another thrift hunt (sorry, I forgot to take a "before" pic but they were previously a blue gray color).

I ABSOLUTELY love these shell sconces (you'll see them in just a bit) but I just couldn’t find the right space for them so I had them tucked away for some time. I considered keeping the original color, then considered a high gloss in white, then I FINALLY settled on gold because it goes well in this space and well, GOLD!😍✨

I knew I wanted to use these “new to me” pieces in my reading nook area. It’s one of those places I change up quite often (partly because I haven’t “perfected” it and partly because I just love switching things up!)

Another thing I was excited about is putting together this fiddle leaf plant! I have seen a lot of my favorite interior designers incorporate them in their homes and I have a gold pot and plant stand I’ve been dying to use so thought this was the perfect time to use it. To be honest, I debated between bamboo (I just love bamboo) and fiddle leaf and the fiddle leaf won (although I’m sure I’ll use the bamboo somewhere later down the line 😉). I was also inspired by my friend Monica at Monica Wants It (if you haven’t checked out her blog, I encourage you to do so, she is AMAZING 😊)! So I gathered all my supplies (l often make floral arrangements so luckily I already had most of the supplies on hand) and went to work on making my fiddle leaf plant (good thing I'm crafty too because these faux beauties run about $80 buck a pop!). I used several fiddle fig tree branches for mine because I like a fuller look.

I also purchased a new navy blue lampshade at At Home on sale for $6 (y’all know my love of pink, blue, and gold).

I’m on the hunt for some new fab wall art (I have a few things in mind), but here is the look all put together.

What do ya'll think about my new gold lamp and gold sconces? Doesn't the lamp look sooooo different with the new shade and Rub n Buff? And I don't mind that the lamp and sconces look a bit "aged", it was kinda the look I was going for...allowing the original colors to slightly "peek" through.

For about $30, I have a whole new look. I kept it pretty simple but I love it!🥰. In order to declutter (and not make a special appearance on “Hoarders”), I am differentiating between things I like and things I love. I’m trying to just stick to things I LOVE. Otherwise, I tire of the items quickly and they get stored away where the clutter (and the chaos) begins.😬. So simplifying feels good...REALLY good (and then that way, I also have extra funds to spare for things I REALLY love☺️).

The things we love and save for doesn’t have to be expensive. We can have a beautiful look without breaking the bank. For instance, I have found the cutest throw pillows at Walmart. The blush brush throw pillow in my reading nook was under $5 at Walmart and the gold pillow was also a Walmart find. The Dalmatian print pillow I previously had and was purchased on sale at Society 6 (if you guys aren’t familiar with them, you HAVE to check them out. Great quality for reasonable prices!)

So there you have it. Shells, pineapples, plants, and palm trees...that’s my language. 😊. Hope you enjoyed reading about my little thrifting journey and how I repurpose my thrifty finds in my home.

What do ya'll think? Do you like thrifting as much as I do? What are some of your treasures or thrifty finds that you love? Please comment and share!
